BCM data file migration

My situation is this:

I was using Windows XP with Office/BCM 2003. My computer crashed and will
not boot up. I can however access the data files on the hard drive.

I now have a new computer with Windows Vista and Office/BCM 2007. I copied
the pst file and it is fine. I've tried different suggestions for getting the
BCM file to work with the new system, including these instructions from an
earlier post (or a variation that works with Vista):

"Hi Rex

Try this.
1. Go into BCM and create a new database. That database needs to match the
name of the .MDF file. So if the MDF file is named "MyBusiness.MDF", create
a new BCM Database with that name

2. Stop the MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ Server by going to Start > Run >
services.msc and selecting the MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ service
3. Copy the original .mdf & .ldf files over the blank database. They should
be in the following location
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager

4. Start the Server again (see step 2)
5. Restart BCM and see if you can access your data

Hope this helps!

It still doesn't work. BCM 2007 cannot read/access my BCM 2003 data file.

Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks so much for any help. I've spent so many hours on this.

Hi Anna,

first of all, make a bacup of your original .mdf & .ldf files, so that if
they get corrupted by different attempts you still have them.

It would surprise me if the below suggestion works - that would imply that
the database model for BCM 2003 and 2007 are exactly the same, and also that
an MSDE database would work in SQL Express without any changes. Stranger
things have happened, but as I said, it would surprise me.

What I think you need to do, is to be able to extract your old data, then
import them back to BCM 2007. What I would try, is to install outlook 2003
and BCM 2003, preferably on another computer if possible. Then create a
database with the same name as your old one, and replace your .mdf and .ldf
files using the description below. If all goes well, you should now have BCM
2003 running with your data, and can either export the data and import them
to BCM 2007, or try an upgrade.

If this is not successful, I would try accessing the data through access (or
SQL Server 2000/2005 if that is available). I wont describe procedure on this
further, but by gaining access to the files you can extract atleast all you
companies and contacts, but will most likely loose their links, and also
loose linking to your logs and attached files.

Good luck - this is a tough one... -Vidar C.
