Removed and reinstalled BCM now can't see old .mdf file

P

PBKSTL

Any help would be appreciated.

I used Add/Remove programs and removed BCM completely. Stupid mistake in
trying to get the software loaded to enable synching with smartphone. I can
see the MSSmallBusiness.mdf file in the right place in my system (running
XP). It's 90MB.

I purchased a new copy of Outlook with BCM and installed the BCM part.
Outlook now has BCM, but when I go to Create New Database or Select Existing
Database, it doesn't see my old DB (where all the data is!)

I have tried multiple fixes including checking to see if SQL is started (it
is), checking the names of who has rights to access, etc. Seem to be right to
me, though I'm just a lowly salesman - not a sysadmin.

In Explorer, I'm not able to copy the .mdf file - I get an Access Denied or
Windows Encountered a Problem error. I can't open the .mdf file in Word or
Excel.

Is there a way to open that .mdf file in another program, get it into Excel
somehow, then import the data into a new BCM database? Or does anyone have
any suggestions about making BCM recognize the old DB?

Thanks,

Paul Kelly

Hi Paul,

Just want to double check. You mentioned that the MSSmallBusiness.mdf
is in the "right" place. Is it under your user profile (C:\Documents
and Settings\[your XP user name]\Local Setting\Application Data
\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager), or is it under another user's?
The reason I am asking is because you also mentioned that you are not
the sysadmin, so I suspected at first that the BCM database is created
by the sysadmin / located under another user's location, and that BCM
"Create or Select Database" might not be looking in the right
location. If this is the case, can you ask the other user to try re-
loading BCM?

Do you have latest BCM service patch? That might help.

With SQL Server Services, you want to make sure that the MSSMLBIZ
instance is running. There may be other instances, but those would be
less relevant to BCM.

With regards to dealing with SmartPhones, on XP I believe you would
want to look for something similar to the Windows Mobile Device Center
on Vista, instead of uninstalling/re-installing BCM.

Good luck. Once you get BCM to load your database, it is a really
good idea to do a full export and/or backup. :)

Dear John,

I have a similar problem - after a system restore I have managed to "place"
my BCM folder with the respective files in the right place (C:\Documents and
Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact
Manager) after having to stop the SQL services to do this. The SQL services
are all running again, but BCM still refuses to see my database.

How do I go about:
- checking user priviledges
- getting BCM to see the database?
- etc to get the database running again

I am sthe system admin

Many thanks,
Andrew

Try attaching the database to the sql instance directly. It may then
show up as available in BCM.

Luther,

thanks for your reply - have you a "instructions for dummy´s" on how to find
this comand string and change it?

I installed the free "SQL Server Managerment Sutidio Express" from MS
website and also have installed the "SQL Server 2005 configuration manager"
.... but don´t know how to use either :(

I have found the solution

http://www.mydatabasesupport.com/fo...ach-sql2005-database-different-directory.html

QUOTE:

Use SQL Server configuration manager from SQL Server 2005 program
goups...There select sql server 2005 services and choose sql server service
and see the Logon account.
If the account is not local system then change it to Local system and then
restart the service and see if the attch works. If it works then give the
necessary previlages to the
toher account and restart the service and see if the attach works fromm D
Drive..

Thanks
