BCM 2007 error after upgrades

Henri Fournier

Last night, I upgraded the following:
* Microsoft Expression Blend V2 SP1
* .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
* VS2008 SP1
* Silverlight Tools fo VS2008 SP1

This morning, when I started Outlook 2007 (with BCM), the Windows Installer
poped up. The title bar reads "Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007
SP1" and the message reads " Please wait while Windows configures Business
Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 SP1". That dialog is followed by another
saying: "Insert the "Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 SP1" disk and
click OK". The "Use source" box just hsa a "1" in it. If I click the Browse
button, I see that it's looking for MSSMLBIZ.msi.

I don't have that disk. I installed SP1 from the download
(BCM2007SP1-KB941652-FullFile-ENU.exe). I extracted the contents of that
download, but it does not contain the MSI.

If I cancel out of the dialog, I get: "Error 1706.No valid source could be
found for product Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 SP1. The Windows
installer cannot continue." When I click OK, Outlook starts and everything
seems normal, including BCM. If I click on BCM Home, I get the same error,
but then it loads fine. I can see my Accounts, Business Contacts, etc. So
far, it doesn't appear that the error effects any functionality, but I'd
still like to get rid of it.

When software is patched (e.g. by Windows Update), Windows needs the
access the original msi, patch that file, and then reapply the msi,
which updates the files that have changed. Usually, Windows saves a
copy of the MSI file in the Windows\installer folder, but BCM is more
complicated than that; it looks like the BCM MSI doesn't have all its
files within itself, but also references files in folders below it).
So you won't be able to update BCM without recreating the folders that
were on the original disk.

I am having the same problem. Started about a week ago on my Vista 32 SP1
w/Office 2007 small business w/updates turned on. I have the original disk
but when I point to the MSI under BCM it rejects it (it says something like
invalid source). So I have to cancel out of the dialogs but that makes Word
unhappy (and perhaps Outlook, too) and it crashes. So I can't view a Word
document, which is nice.

Any one have a clue? I am going to whack the add-on in the registry for the
time being because I need to get some work done.

Thanks,

Charlie

You can disable add-ins in Outlook.

I'm having the same problem. Anytime I open any Office 2007 app I get this
error message "Error 1706.No valid source could be found for product Business
Contact Manager for Outlook 2007 SP1. The Windows Installer cannot
continue.". Just started about a week ago. Is there 'step by step'
instructions for fixing it somewhere? This is incredibly annoying.

It looks like it's figured out that it needs to update BCM, but can't
find the original BCM MSI file. If you do not use BCM, uninstall it.

I use BCM and I would like to get rid of the error. I've tried inserting the
original disk with no luck. I tried reinstalling SP1 with no luck. I have
found other people with the error but no info on how to fix. Anything would
be appreciated.

Thanks

I posted the problem in the Private Partner NG and got a response from a
Microsoft tech. Unfortunately, after taking a few days to research the issue
and contact the BCM group, he said he wouldn't be able to solve it by
corresponding back and forth in the NG. However, he's initiated a support
incident, so they will call me, rather than I call them, so I won't have to
pay for the support call. Hopefully, I'll hear from them tomorrow and I'll
post the progress and/or solution here shortly thereafter. Stay tuned...

Thanks. I really appreciate it. It's not keeping me from working but it is
annoying.

I received an e-mail from the support tech, now we just have to work out a
time to connect and get it resolved.

After checking a few things, the first thing we tried was to go to Program
Features, select Office 2007, click Change and choose Repair. In my case, it
failed. Rebooted, tried again, failed again. Bigger problem...

Was sent here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218
to manually uninstall Office. It hung. Tried to uninstall BCM, it also hung.
Try to reboot, it also hung (on shutdown and eventually blue screened).
Wouldn't reboot. Rebooted in Safe mode, backup important data. Ran ChkDsk.
Rebooted. Working again. Did full backup. Reinstalled Office, BCM and SP1.
Rebooted. Working fine. Installed all Office updates. rebooted. Everything
is working now.

Problem solved and it only took two support techs, 4 hours on the phone and
13 hours in total. What a PITA.

Suggestion: do a full backup "before" you start.

Did any of you (with this error) install any of these just before the
problem surfaced?
* .NET 3.5 SP1
* Expression Blend SP1
* Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2008

I developed that error after trying to install the "drag and drop"
functionality to Live Mesh Beta last night.

H

Henri Fournier

I had Live Mesh installed as well. Although it no longer loads at startup
now.

Can you uninstall it? If so, do you still get the problem with BCM?

Henri,

It is possible to uninstall Live Mesh (which I did). Unfortunately I did not
solve the problem. I'm still getting the error message, even after inserting
the Outlook Business Contact disk it asked me to insert. I've backed up my
PST file and am tempted to uninstall and reinstall Office 2007, but I'm
hoping to hear an easier fix before having to go through the hassle.

J

Jim W

Success. I decided to uninstall and re-install BCM 2007. The first
re-installation did not solve the problem, so out of frustration I
uninstalled and re-installed it again and voila! No more annoying error
message.

Great! I passed on that info to the MS tech, who just made a followup call
and is now closing my case.
