My laptop works fine when plugged into an outlet. When it runs on battery,
the machine immediately shifts to safe mode? Any idea why?

So if you are running fine on AC and you unplug the AC, the machine
immediately reboots into safe mode? Or, when you start up cold in
battery mode it starts in Safe Mode?

It happens when I unplug the laptop. I do get an error message that says
"ati2dvag display driver stopped working." ???? You think it might be a
driver issue? What should I do?

When you unplug the laptop, and get this message, does it actually
*reboot* into safe mode? If it doesn't reboot, how do you know it is in
safe mode? Safe mode will have the words "Safe Mode" at all four
corners of the screen and a popup message will tell you that the
computer is operating in Safe Mode. Does this happen?

Since the message involves an ATI driver, have you gone to ATI and
downloaded the latest drivers for your video chip set? That would be
the next thing to do. Laptops will do some strange things based on
whether they are on AC or battery power. You might also want to take a
look at the power management schemes available to you and select one
that fits how you want to operate.

I guess the screen resolution changes to what you see when it reverts to Safe
Mode. You know, huge icons, unworkable screen. It does not actually reboot.

Then it is NOT in safe mode. What has happened is that the ATI video
driver shifts into a lower resolution (like from 1024x768 to 800x600 or
640x480) when the computer shifts into battery power. This is very
likely a driver problem and your best bet would be to locate newer
drivers for your ATI chip set. You might also find your power
management scheme setup program (different laptops have different scheme
names so I can't help you there) which are usually in the Control Panel
area under such icons as "Power Management" or "Power Options". Take a
look there are try several of the options to see if the problem can be
eliminated or tied to one power scheme.

Best procedure would be to get new drivers.
