Battery problems

I have a compaq presario 700. My battery is not working. The battery is
stuck on 98% and charging, but whenever the power cord gets disconnected, the
computer completely shuts off. The battery itself is fine. When I pull it
out, and press the button on it, it lights up to 100% meaning there is juice
in it. The problem is that the computer is not recognizing the battery. I
have turned the computer on without the battery. That didnt work. Then I
tried in safe mode, turning off the floppy hard drive, and uninstalling the
ACPI power button, and that didnt work. What else can I try, short of
reloading windows?
Thanks

This is undoubtedly a hardware problem. It could be with the internal
circuitry of the battery or with the laptop itself.

It's certainly not a Windows problem as no portion of Windows is loaded when
the computer is off. That is to say nothing in Windows would prevent it from
"seeing" the battery when you attempt to turn the computer on, Windows
doesn't take over until after the computer has powered up and gone through
it's "power on self test" routine.

Have you considered that the battery doesn't have any intelligence. The
intelligence lies in the computer.

Your battery may be 'dead', when the power is plugged in, the voltage from
the battery reads correctly and the PC thinks that it's on 'charge': however
it isn't getting a proper power reading. Unplugging and the 'shutdown'
indicates no power in the battery and hence my conclusion that the battery
may be dead.

Have it checked out .

Actually Lithium Ion Laptop batteries are "intelligent" in that they have
their own internal circuitry.

Please see; http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030314081843218

"LiIon battery packs have an internal circuit to prevent overcharging (which
would cause them to overheat). There can be several functions for the
protection circuit, including shutting it down in case of over charging,
when the voltage drops to a predefined level, or if it thinks the battery is
otherwise damaged.

Problems with the power circuit can cause a "good" battery to shut down."

That the OP gets good voltage indicators with the battery out of the laptop
indicates that the battery is not "dead." A faulty battery may however still
be the cause of the problem as I originally stated.

Lithium batteries certainly ARE "intelligent", as opposed to some who post
here!
