barton vs Sempron

Hello:

Just a question:

What makes a Sempron processor better than a Barton Processor? Any specs
in short?

It is not better (except for the 3100+). The Sempron is based on the
thoroughbred Athlon XP core. It has 256k cache vs. 512k for the barton core.
All of the socket A Semprons are basically rebranded Athlon XP's, with the
performance rating comparing them to Celerons rather than Pentium 4. The
2800+ runs at 2.0Ghz. A thoroughbred Athlon XP (333fsb) running at 2.08Ghz
is a 2600+. In the case of the 3100+, it is based on the socket 754 Athlon
64, but with only 256k cache and the 64-bit capability disabled. It runs at
1.8Ghz.

A Sempron is not better. It is approximately a Barton hobbled by the
marketing department by reducing the size of the cache.

only the 3100 is better (and this one requires a motherboard upgrade). All
the others are crap

Sempron is the name AMD has chosen to represent all its new 32 bit processors.
The K8 based Sempron 3100+ is an Athlon 64 with the 64 bit features disabled
and half the L2 cache. The Sempron 3000+ is a Barton. The Athlon XP line
is being phased out. I believe only Athlon XP 2800+ through 3200+ are still
being made, and their manufacture will probably cease in early '05. What is
uncertain is for how long AMD will continue to make K7 chips( under the
Sempron name), before moving all their processors to K8 chips(with the
32 bit ones then being chips with the 64 bit features disabled). I believe
AMD announced that they don't plan to move K7 production to 90nm.

Hmm, hadn't heard of the 3000+ yet. Seems like a decent part. Newegg doesn't
seem to have it yet though.
