Bad thoughts??

Hi All,

My brother-in-law had a someone build him a computer and placed on it
Windows XP Home edition. However, he never received a CD with it. When I
tried to do the updates, it was refused. So I decided I was going to go and
visit this person because my feelings were that it was a burnt copy of XP.
Unfortunately, the guy has since moved from his apartment and I still can't
locate him.

I told my brother-in-law to go out and by a legit copy of XP Home so he has
a CD. Although it is a costly measure, it is a lesson he will have to learn.
Does he pick up the Upgrade or the full version and can he just install it
overtop or does he have to wipe it clean and go from there?

Thanks,
Sam

You'll need a "Full Version" of Windows XP Home Edition and
perform a "clean install":

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

7. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

He can purchase the upgrade version if he has a qualifying product
such as Win98, 98SE, ME. All he needs to do is a repair install over
the top of the illegal copy. Follow this procedure:

All you have to do is replace the pirated key/license with the
purchased key/license. This will make windows
legal according to the ms eula. To change the key:

1) Run regedit and go to:

HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents
In the right pane double click on "oobetimer" and change at least
one
digit of this value

(ie: change hex "CA" to "AC"). This will deactivate windows.
Exit regedit.

2) Choose run from the start menu and type in this command
c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

3) Choose activate by phone.

4) Choose Change Product Key.

5) Type in the new product key.
CLICK UPDATE

6) Now reboot.

7) After reboot, re-enter command from step 2 to verify activation.

No, you cannot simply change the Product Key. The pirated version
is likely a volume license Windows XP Pro version. You cannot
change a volume license Product Key with a retail upgrade Product Key.
You can try it, but it won't work and you'll end up performing a clean install
as I previously recommended.

Also, one cannot perform a repair install of the pirated XP Pro
version using a XP Home version. Only by using a "Full Version"
of XP Pro can a repair install be performed.

Total BS Carey, and you know it. Stop acting like an apologist and
get real. Give out some practical advice for a change.j

Regards, and have a happy new year.

I used the procedure below to upgrade the bogus copy to a legal one for XP
Pro (full package, not upgrade).

I changed a single digit as described below and ran the "rapair" off the
installation disk.

Greetings --

You need to purchase and use a legitimate full retail copy of
WinXP Home to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

Remember, he should also report whomever sold you the pirated
software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; he's been
defrauded.
