Bad Product ID number

While trying to solve an XP Pro problem, I get this message:

"The product ID number you entered is not supported in the country that you
have selected."

BUT, that product number is precisely the one I took from My
Computer>Properties>General Tab. It IS the correct product ID number, but
Microsoft won't help me unless I give them a "valid" number. How can I solve
this problem?

Was your Windows XP originally intended to be used in the region you
reside?
You may need to call Microsoft directly.

That isn't the right number however. That number is NOT the number you - or
somebody - typed in to get XP running. In order to get the right key to
punch in, you have to run keyfinder from
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
