Backup

I'm currently demoing a electronic vaulting software. When I run the backup
I get an error about open files throughout the WINNT directory about files in
use. I'm also backing up the system state in the file server backup. This
server is a DC. The vendor is telling me the errors are normal and the WINNT
directory can be excluded from the backup job since the sytem state is being
backed up. The vendor told me that in the even of atotal disater we would
bring the server backup with just the base os and restore the system stae and
that is all that needs to be done. IS this correct, that backing up WINNT
directory is excessive or redunent since i'm backing up the system state.

Hi ,

Which backup tools did you used? NTBackup?

Actually, not exactly. I'd like to suggest you backup system state of a
domain controller on a regular basis. FYI since this backup contains your
Active Directory it needs
to be physically secured to some degree and it would be a good idea to keep
an offsite backup also

Hope this helps.

The system stae gets backeedup with out an issue. The WINNT directory I'm
geting file in use errors. According to the vendor that this a normal error
and its not needed to backup the winnt directory since this information is
backed up in the system state. According t them in the event of a disater we
would bring up a fresh box and restore the system stae and the server would
be back up and running. Would you agree with this.

Hi,

Check following article:

263532 How to perform a disaster recovery restoration of Active Directory
on a computer with a different hardware configuration
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;263532

You should perform a full backup including the system state and the drive
that contains the system volume

Hope this helps.
