I'm running windows/xp home edition. I wan't to back up my files on my
system using a drive other than A: drive. When I select another drive D: or
E: I'm asked to type a name for the backup, but the utility tells me that the
name could not be used (whatever I type in). It says {please ensure it is a
valid path and that I have sufficent access}. and approx. how many disk
would I need. I want store my backup on a cd data disk, because it has more
storage space than a floppy.

ntbackup.exe does not allow backing up directly to CD.

From X:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP\README.TXT

[[NTBackup Backup/Restore and ASR release notes
2. Backup to CDRW

If you decide to backup to a CDRW, you cannot target that device directly.
You must create a backup set of 650MB or less and backup to a file. After
the file is complete, copy the file to the CDRW.]]
