Backup Utility and Removable Storage

I have a Western Digital 120gb hard drive attached to a
desktop via usb. I can schedule a backup job through the
utility and select this drive. However, backup never
runs. I know NT Backup will not backup to CD-R, DVD-R,
etc., any issues with backing up to removable storage
(i.e. zip drive, external hdd, etc.?)

Apparently. Didn't your WD external come with a utility like Retrospect
Lite? If it did, why not use it - it's a great program. Here's a link
to Dantz's site: http://www.dantz.com/.

No, it did not come with any such utility.

That's too bad. Maybe I'm thinking of the Maxtors. In any case, you
might want to try Retrospect or even Nero Backup which is quite nice.

Probably the same. NTBackup is a tape oriented system and does not know
about other removable media (except floppies!)
But it may be a scheduling matter. Do you use a password when logging
on to XP? If not then scheduled tasks will not run, in which case:

If it is XP Pro, run Control Panel - Admin Tools - Local Security
Policy. In Local Policies - Security Options d-click in the right pane
on
'Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords. . . .' and set to
Disabled.

If it is XP Home, which does not have this tool, see
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 67, left, 'Run Scheduled tasks without PW - Home'
