backup to .pst file 'operation failed'

I use Outlook 2000 IMO.

Up until recently I have had no problems whatsoever in backing up my
personal folders to a .pst file. Now, all of a sudden, every time I back
up, the process seems to work fine until the very end, when I get an error
message saying 'Operation failed'.

A .pst file icon is created at the target destination as usual, though it is
one of those unrecognised file types icons, rather than the Outlook icon I
usually get.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Steve

What "process" are you using?
Close Outlook.
Copy the your PST file to a safe location.

"process" - what I always do: export to PST file, sit back and watch the
little animation of files transferring. The error message happens at what I
assume is the end of that operation.

Why would you export a PST? You don't need to convert it to another format.
Exporting is not a recommended way to backup PST's. Now you see why.
