I have been unable to use the Windows Backup utility to do backups to CD-R
or CD-RW media. I even read somewhere that the Backup utility will not work
with CDs by design. That seems unbelievable. Can anyone clarify? Thanks

You are right, a cd-r is not seen as a back-up device. You
can make a folder on your hard drive then back that up.
XP's native cd burning program will not span cd's though.

Buy a second Hard drive $69.00 these days and a good
copy/backup program to make a clone. XP-Casper is one.

http://www.fssdev.com/products/ make the clone and then
un-plug the power to the drive if you want.

Want to test drive a Demo for 30 days. It has some
features disabled.

It will do if you use packet writing software such as Direct CD.
Unfortunately, MS's backup solutions are very bare-bones, just enough to say
they've provided one.

You can't back up a HD to a folder on the HD you are backing up. I've
never used ANY backup program that would allow that. How can you back
up a drive that is continually changing because you are backing it up?

If you go this route, you'll need a second partition on the existing
drive, or a second physical drive. Backing up to either of those is
possible.

THe NTBackup will still not 'span' across multiple CDs, because if they
are seen as either fixed devices spanning does not arise, or if as
removable ones the only removable devices NTBackup knows are tapes and
floppies. It is an old program, really only included, I think, as a
compatibility device for bringing forward old backup tapes from upgraded
NT systems
