Backup to a CD

When attempting to use the built in back up utility in Windows xp, after I select the D: drive and select a name for the backup job, I get the message "The backup file name could not be used. Please ensure it is a valid path and you have sufficient access." I have tried other names, to no avail. Any ideas?
