Can anyone recommend an automatic backup software?
I'm looking for something that will automatically backup all new/changed
files from specific directories when I hookup my laptop to the network.

Look at Cobian backup from http://www2.educ.umu.se/~cobian/

You'll have to press the "backup" button when you link with the network,
but as long as you've previously set up the list of directories you want
to back up and their destinations it will then do just what you want.
