backup size limitation

I am trying to use the built-in backup utility on my XP
Pro machine, to backup my hardrive to an Iomega firewire
device. The backup starts and runs but then stops with an
error message "the device is full". I have 14 gb on the
hard drive, and my Iomega device has 20 gb free. Is it
true that there is a limit to how much the backup program
will backup? Is there anyway around this? Thank you for
your help!

Is the Iomega disk FAT or NTFS? The file size limit in FAT32 is 4GB I
think....

Each file no larger than 4GB is the FAT32 limit. A *good* backup
program should realize that and create spans - as many 4GB files as
required to back up all of your data. Many third party backup programs
will do that.

The backup program is a limited affair, and is tape oriented. As such
it probably has a limit at 4GB at most on the size file it can put on a
device, and does not handle spanning of any device except tapes. It was
I think provided for the benefit of those upgrading from NT and
bringing their tapes forward: anyone else should look for a third party
tool

Don't know if the XP version of NTBackup is all that different from the
W2k/2003 server versions, but I do file-level backups of lots of things, all
the time - 400MB in one case, with no problems.
