Backup or Restore Wizard hangs up

When I try to backup, the process seems successful until about 2/3 through
the process when the utility stops & doesn't give an error message.

I disable my screen saver, disconnect the modem, & close the anti-virus &
firewall before opening Backup. There is more than enough space on the hard
drive to store a backup. I choose to save the backup to the Desktop. How can
I make Backup complete the process?

I'm guessing (because you didn't specify) that you are referring to
Windows Backup and not a third party program.

Does the Windows Backup log (Tools > Report) offer any explanation? Does
Event Viewer offer any explanation?

If you are referring to a third party backup program please ask that
program's technical support for assistance.

[P.S. You should not disable your protective software in order to
backup. Any program that requires you to disable your protective
software for it to work properly is not worth considering. You should
not have to disconnect your modem to backup.]

Thanks for the reply.
I was using Windows Backup for the first time. So, I'm assuming there is no
log, but if there was, where would I access it?

I'm not familiar with Event Viewer, but in perusing entries in Application,
I saw an error message ID 1517 listed once. Since I tried Backup 3 separate
times, I don't think this applies, since there was only one error message ID
1517.

Any other suggestions? Thanx.

Hi again:

As I explained, the Windows Backup log is viewable from Tools > Report.

Event Viewer can be your good friend - although I can think of better
friends to have - so it pays to get familiar with it. Look for entries
recorded around the date and time you experience a problem. The entries
contain a link which (usually) offers more explanation.

Here's a pretty good guide to Event Viewer:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic40108.html

and you can find others with a web search.

The key to solving your problem is knowing what went wrong.

I can see that Event Viewer could be quite useful. Looks like it'll take a
little time to get to know it better. Thanx for responding.
