After a sorry experience with a dead hard disk, I want to find the best and
most efficient way to back up my laptop (Windows XP Prof). I regularly
backup usual working files, but how can I best back up all the settings,
software etc - last time it took weeks to re-install, re-customise etc all
that stuff. Will buying a second hard disk allow me to simply 'mirror' my
entire hard disk, or are there reasons that won't work? One thought is to
get a second computer (family pushing for one anyway) and partitioning part
of that disk to 'mirror' the laptop's hard disk - is that a possibility as
it could kill two birds with one stone.

Any guidance would be great.

Thanks

Save theme settings in Display/theme tab. "Save as"
button.
These would be fonts/colors/sizes/etc.
A desktop.theme file would be small and save on diskette.

Also a password diskette is handy.
