Backup on 64-bit Vista Home Premium

I have a new 64-bit Pavilion Vista Home Premium, and I just bought Seagate's
Maxtor disk with backkup software, which Seagate now tells me will not work
with 64-bit. Also, I just found out that the Windows backup wizard does not
come on home editions. I have Windows Live Onecare installed. Questions: (1)
Will it work well to just use Onecare to backup to the Maxtor disk, deleting
the Maxtor software but keeping the disk? (2) Will Vista's ownership and
permissions aspects potentially block some backups? The context is a two-PC
home network.
Secondary question: With respect to backup freeware, I wonder if the
software I choose might unexpectedly go away and I then can't repair my
backup software, rendering past backups useless.

Secondary answer: as long as you don't lose the downloaded free software's
installer, you can always reinstall the software. It doesn't matter whether
the original company exists or not.

In addition, if you choose cloning software, the backup is just a plain
Windows partition that you can read from Windows.
