backup issues

i can copy and backup files from my C: drive to my C: drive with no problem,
but when I do it to another drive I'm not allowed to open the file. Not even
if drap it from the backup drive to my C: drive.

Urecognized file format 'F:\file name.mdb

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Is F a network or external drive such as a USB flash or hard drive? If so
it's possible that you have a bad network card or USB port.

Are you double-clicking on the file in something like Windows Explorer? If
so, try opening up Access first then find the file out on F. Does that work?

Could you possibly have more than one version of Access on your computer?

I backup to a thumb drive. I don't think it's the drive since other files
(Quicken, Word, InDesign) don;t have a problem. Also, I have this problem
even if I e-mail a friend a database.

double clicking on the icon in the window fro the F drive. Other files backed
up on the F drive work with no problems (i.e. Wod, InDesign, Quicken).

Also, I only have one version on Access on my computer (2003).

You're not the only person who's reported this problem. I've seen
several posts about databases becoming unreadable after being copied
to a USB drive. I don't have any diagnosis or solution, but just
wanted to let you know!

You might want to try http://groups.google.com to search these
newsgroups for (say) USB and CORRUPTION.

Almost all of my students use USB drives for the Access class. They do some
copying back and forth to the hard and network drives.

One thing that will mess up a file on a USB or even floppy A-drive is
removing the storage device before completely shutting down the database AND
Access. Access sometimes doesn't write to disk until after shut down.

Also for a USB flash drive you must make sure that it's safe to remove.
Hovering over the little icon at the lower right of the Windows XP screen
will tell you. On older versions of Windows, you must manually shut down the
drive before removing the drive.

Now if the flash drive is one of the new U3 types, you also have to stop the
drive with software or risk corrupting files.

Thanks, but I don't think it's the USB drive since the file also won't open
if I attach it to an e-mail. Still, it's good to know the information you
gave me. I also want to say thanks for linking me to Google group.
