Backup incomplete

Dan

I have a customer with a 2000 server.

It has a 10/20GB Travan (Seagate) tape backup.

A backup is performed each night.
For sometime now the backup rarely every completes.
Ie say for example D: and "system state" as set to
backup, usually all of D: will complete but it will
almost alsway stop at a random point during the System
State backup.

There are NO errors, the backup log's last line is simply
the last file being backed up.

The event viewer shows say "started backup of D:"
"Backup of D: complete" "start backup of "system state""
and then nothing. As system state doesn't finish there
is no "verify" entries in the event viewer, nor are there
any errors.

I did note once when "manually" doing a backup (which
also stops) that after it stops the media is
not "visable" in the removable storate manager for
sometime. Not sure what this means.

Could it be a faulty tape drive? Any ideas would be great

The tape is most likely full.

Try doing a full backup manually, and see if you get any messages.

Just one hint. You are likely only to get compression rate of about
1.6 to 1.7, so a 10/20GB tape is only going to hold about 17GB.

The 2.0 compression rate advertised is a maximum theoretical
compression rate. You'll never get near to it.

Cheers,

Cliff

Thanks for the info.

I will try full manual backup.

Total data backed up is max of 10GB and compression is
enabled. But it often stops quite early.
