Backup Error / Stall

S

SLaboss

I frequently run the MS Xp Pro backup funciton manually and the last time I
tried to open the Windows XP Pro backup function using the Start Menu
\Accessories\Backup, the system either stalls without any aciton whatsoever
or a small dialog box appears (not the normal backup page) and stalls. I
would appreciate any suggestions about how to address/correct this problem.
My computer is up to date with all required MS updates and I am running MS
Windows XP Pro SP3.

Hi S,

You can try this: Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW and click OK.

Since you have SP3 installed, do you have the i386 folder available with
the files for SP3? If not you may want to download the network install:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4
extract the files (which will extract to an i386 folder),
and then add the path to the Installation Sources value in the registry,
located at:
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\setup
noting that each path is on a separate line.

Or you can slipstream a CD with SP3
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xpsp3_slipstream.asp

and when you run SFC, just insert the CD when prompted.

Terry,

Thanks for the response but I am not exactly sure what the command function
SFC / SCANNOW will do? The i386 folder and files are listed.

By the way, when I do attempt to start the backup function, the Task Manager
lists ntbackup as a process but no application is started/listed.

sfc /scannow checks the authenticity of the system files and replaces
the files that have been "fiddled" with or corrupt. If asked for the XP
CD, direct it to the i386 folder where SP3 resides.

Terry,
Thanks again for the response. I executed the sfc / scannow command (on a
whim) and a dialog box flashes on the screen so quickly that I cannot
ascertain what it contains/performs. I then tried to open the backup function
again with the same result as previously.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi S,

Open a command prompt using Start, Run, type cmd and click OK. Then type
sfc /scannow . You will be able to see the output from there.

Report back,

Terry,

Thanks again for the response. I received the following detail when I ran
the sfc / scannow command:

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve Labossiere>sfc / scannow

Microsoft(R) Windows XP Windows File Checker Version 5.1
(C) 1999-2000 Microsoft Corp. All rights reserved

Scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with
correct Mi
crosoft versions.

SFC [/SCANNOW] [/SCANONCE] [/SCANBOOT] [/REVERT] [/PURGECACHE] [/CACHESIZE=x]

/SCANNOW Scans all protected system files immediately.
/SCANONCE Scans all protected system files once at the next boot.
/SCANBOOT Scans all protected system files at every boot.
/REVERT Return scan to default setting.
/PURGECACHE Purges the file cache.
/CACHESIZE=x Sets the file cache size.

After performing the above, I tried to open the backup utility again and
nothing happened; except, as previously, ntbackup.exe shows up as an open
process in Task Manager, with no corresponding application open/listed.

You ran the command incorrectly. There should be no spaces after the
forward slash. The command is:

sfc /scannow

you ran

sfc / scannow

and being that the syntax was incorrect you got the help screen for the
command.

John John (MVP),

Thanks for the instructions. I ran the command correctly this time and was
asked for the installation CD - I could find no way to "re-direct" the dialog
box to the i386 folder - so I inserted my original Windows XP Pro
installation CD (I hope this was not a significant mistake). The scan
completed after a few minutes with no notifications/dialog boxes. I do not
know how to find out the results of the scan but the ntbackup function is
still not working as described previously. I also manually ran an update scan
after performing the scannow function to determine if any changes that were
made required updates.
Any suggestions for what I should do next are greatly appreciated?
