XP Shutdown Stalls

S

Sissy Sniffen

I currently have Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

My computer stalls when shutting down at the "Windows is Shutting Down"
screen. I have to manually shut down. Any thoughts as to why?

The only thing I remember that i have down is update Internet Explorer 7 to
Internet Explorer 8 due to my Internet running slow (which it still is).

Thanks in advance!

I don't think I'd try and troubleshoot a slow Internet issue by installing a
beta browser (IE8). Uninstall IE8 as your first step. If that doesn't work
(and I suspect it won't):

Shutdown issues are generally caused by a program and/or process that is
refusing to exit gracefully. The program and/or process can be from malware
or can be legitimate (such as an invasive antivirus like Norton or McAfee).
If you are using a Norton or McAfee product, uninstall it and replace with
a better program such as NOD32, Kasperksy, or Avast (free). The Windows
Firewall is adequate for most people.

A.The first step is always to make sure your computer is virus/malware free.

B. If the computer is virus/malware-free, drivers are current, and no Norton
or McAfee programs are installed, then do clean-boot troubleshooting to see
which program/process is the culprit:

C. If you need more information, here is an excellent shutdown
troubleshooter:

Standard caveat: If troubleshooting the issue is too difficult - and there
is absolutely no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the
machine to a computer repair shop. This will not be your local
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place. Get recommendations from family,
friends, colleagues.

Internet Explorer 8 is a beta product. Uninstall?

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Uninstalling the IE8 did the job. I didn't know that was a beta version and
am not really quite sure what beta means. Anyway, thank you.

I uninstalled IE8 and tested it by shutting down. it seems to have worked.

I downloaded User Profile Hive Cleanup Service. I should now just let it
run and do it's thing when i shut down? There is nothing that i currently
need to do?

Thanks for the help so far!

Yes your undertstanding of the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service is correct.
It runs and need no further attention.

Unless your computer is a spare test machine it can be unwise to run beta
poducts. The provider has released an advance, not fully tested, programme
to find out what bugs remain. Many users are not equipped to deal with the
problems a beta can cause.
