Backup Error 0x80780018

I've been trying to create my first Complete PC Backup and Restore Image
since it seems very important. However when I follow the on screen
instructions and click "start backup", the process fails and I get this
notification:

The backup failed. Not all volumes containing system data are included in
the backup. (0x80780018).

I haven't modified or installed new programs onto this Lenovo thinkpad yet.
I have a Windows Vista Ultimate and I'm wondering what's the problem. I've
tried the backup process with CDs or an external harddrive with 100 gigs of
memory and both methods fail. Someone help please?

Just to give additional info:
- I do not have multiple drives that I am trying to backup, just the
original C drive
- I have an NTFS harddrive

Please can anyone help? I would like to get this backup done before I start
modifying the laptop.

I cannot help you because I am having the same issue. My error is System
cannot find the file specified 0x8007002. I have went as far as reinstalling
the O/S twice. Doing some seaching I found many other issues with both the
backup and restore in both Premium and Ultimate versions of Vista. This has
been an issue ever since I upgraded. I have no unsupported hardware - all
drivers are certified by Microsoft. It looks like an issue that Microsoft
will need to fix. I must add that I did have one backup that finished. But
when I tried to restore the PC complete backup my system would not reboot. I
have a quad XPS 710. I finally purchased a 3rd party copy/imaging software
that works very well (if you have another drive handy). I purchased Ultimate
just for the ability to have a full PC copy for restoring if needed.
-- Let me know if you find an answer to the issue. I sure would like to
know why these errors are happening - not only for us - but for many other
Vista users.

I have the exact same problem trying to do a Complete PC Backup of my Thinkpad.
I am also looking for a way to fix the problem.

I finally got the file backup to work and the system restore. I did get one
run of the full backup to run but was not able to do a restore without my
machine crashing. I talked with Dell about the issue and they said that it is
a well known issue with Vista and that it was not the XPS 710 I am running. I
finally purchased a 3rd party copy/image/defrag, etc from Paragon-Software
and I'm very happy with the results from there package. The restores from
Paragon works great. I am waiting for Vista to fix what we are dealing with.
Good luck. Stay in touch.
