Backing up Windows XP registry (re: virus)

My sister let 12 Backdoor.Imiserv viruses on our computer. I have to get rid of them manually apparently (which Symantec says requires only moderate expertise!). Ha! They suggest making a backup of the Windows registry. This is the only thing I'm having trouble understanding and really don't want to bring my computer to a place. Is it wise to forego this backup step or should I just bite the bullet and bring my computer in? Thoughts/opinions?
