Back up of registry

I want to modify the registry to rid my XP home computer of a virus.
I am forewarned to back up the registry. However, this is not a simple task for XP.

Does creating a system restore point have the same effect as backing up the registry?

i.e. if i screw up the registry, can i simply use system restore to restore the registry?

4. Click "Export" from the drop-down menu.
5. Click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select Local Disk(C.
6. Type Backup.reg in the File Name field.
7. Click Save.

to make a complete backup of the registry. Neither does
it export the whole registry (for example, no information
from the "SECURITY" hive is saved), nor can the exported
file be used later to replace the current registry with
the old one. Instead, if you re-import the file, it is
merged with the current registry, leaving you with an
absolute mess of
old and new registry keys."

Yes.

You will also restore any system file changes made since making the
restore point, so make a fresh one. before starting.

Also you can make an auxiliary backup with ERUNT (free) from
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt
Put the folder it makes *inside* C:\Windows; then if there is a total
registry disaster, you can boot to a recovery console level, and there
copy the files in it back to windows\system32\config
