backing up software

Isn't there a way to back up your software so you can
keep a copy in case something happens to your original?
I tried to copy but I keep getting prompted to insert
correct cd in drive.

Many software cds are copy protected to prevent such copying.
It can be done with 3rd party software,but this is not the place to discuss
defeating copy protection.
Google is your friend.
