Two very easy and very good ways:

1. Use the built-in System Restore feature (which does more than
backup the registry).

2. Use the excellent third-party freeware program ERUNT.

To backup the registry I use Erunt:
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
This program needs to be run as Admin to backup the registry.
It also has a daily backup routine (default 30 day cycle, but adjustable) but this
will only work with UAC disabled.
(To instigate a daily backup with UAC enabled you can create a task in Task Scheduler.)
