Backing up Quicken

M

Mellowed

All of a sudden, probably since the last Vista update, I cannot backup my
Quicken file. It say 'access to drive C denied'. I do a search on
'banking.qdf', the main quicken file and find that it is located in
C:\Users\(user name)\ AppData\Local. When going to that location I'm
advised 'access is denied'.

How do I reverse that?

The easiest way is to select another backup location. You might
consider backing up to CDRW or Thumb Drive or somewhere NOT on your
harddrive.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the problem is not being able to get to the
original storage location to back it up. All I'm trying to do is a
copy/save. The latest file date is 24 June, however I can only access a
file dated 14 June at another location. The latested file is located at
C:\Users\ - - \AppData\Local. When going there Access is denied.

Access is denied because that's probably not where the file is located.
Open Windows Explorer and see if you can find it or if it's one of
those "phantom" folders Vista likes so much.

Then do a backup to some other location, preferably NOT on your hard
drive, it will be complete and you'll have no need of the previous
backups.

I did a Vista Search for the elusive file. The only place for the most
recent file is in the folder that access is denied. The other places only
have Archive files. Windows Explorer also will not let me access the
folder. It is locked out. I've even checked 'properties' to make sure that
nothing is blocking access. Properties look OK. I'm almost to the point of
backing out all of the most recent Windows updates.

The folder doesn't have the small white box with an arrow in it, does
it?

Did you click on the securities tab and make sure you have
permissions?

I'm still confused as to why the backup was there in the first place,
that's not where Quicken should put backups AFAIK.

I think there are too many moving parts in Vista. I spent the last hour
trying to figure out how to temporarly disable UAC in case that was
contributing to the problem. Control Panel Security only provides for
turning it on. I couldn't find how to turn it off. Then I check the NG and
was following up on your suggestion. Without doing ANYTHING, I was able to
go directly to the folder and copy the file! Go figure! I don't know what
happened. But at least for now I was able to backup my file. Note that
Quicken didn't put the backup file in the elusive folder. It put the
primary file in the folder. FYI this is Quicken 2002. It has been working
perfectly since the Vista installation in February with no problems with
backup.

I certainly appriciate the time you took to help. Now I just wish I knew
why it started working.

The problem originated when trying to backup Quicken within the program
using Backup. That still didn't work until I disabled UAC. I just found
out how to disable UAC and now everything works like it should.

I don't know. I like the idea of UAC, but, it is interfering where it
shouldn't.

I run Quicken 2007 under Vista Ultimate. Quicken backup works fine
with UAC on.

He's running Quicken 2002. I run 2007 also, don't know what's
different in 2002?

Turning off UAC is Sooooooo easy but nobody takes the easy way to do
it!

Here's the really easy way, so simple a cave man could do it or... even
I can do it. ;-)

Ready? You're gonna feel silly, here it is:

Click on Help and Support, type UAC in the search box, hit Enter. Look
at the second item.

Me neither!

We'll probably never know but I sure wish you'd backup somewhere off
your harddrive..... I'm still recovering from a HD disaster the
destroyed BOTH of my HDs and the Acronis Image files also....

My Quicken files were/are backed up to a CDRW disk, it took only a
mouse click to restore after I reinstalled Quicken.

For one thing, accoding to Intuit only the very latest version of
Quicken (and QuickBooks) is supported in Vista so it isn't surprising
that older versions, while they may run, are wonky with UAC.

I do backup on DVD. The problem was that I couldn't get to the file to back
it up. GRRRRR. I sent another post regarding the UAC and a responder put
me on the UAC in Help and Support. And, it was easy.

Thanks again.

Quicken ran fine. I just couldn't back it up. REF: Quicken 2002

Quicken 2002 is not Vista compatible.

Thanks Rock, but I'm using Quicken 2002 just fine with Vista. I just did
have a problem with UAC and only UAC during a backup. Quicken 2002 is
compatible with Vista, at least for my general banking needs.

You have already run into one incompatibility. Who knows what others there
are, but certainly suite yourself.

Been following this thread with interest. Forget where I got it originally,
but I (my wife) has been doing home accounts on Quicken for Windows
3.1/95/98 (free with WinME computer) and was then given by Intuit a free
Year 2000 upgrade. This has been installed on my Vista Home premium box and
to date (touch wood and whistle) is working fine.

I (she) backs up to a CD-RW in the DVD-RW drive with no problems at all.

If only ALL my (usually free/inherited software) worked as straightforwardly
under Vista HP.

Sorry Mellowed, I know it's no help for me (and others) to say "Well I don't
have any problems with Program X", but it does seem as though Vista is
"temperamental" over what it will run/what will run under it. Trouble is MS
(and their MVPs) blame the software/hardware suppliers/authors and the
software authors blame MS. The consumer is left in the middle high and dry.
