Background send receive

I recently moved to Outlook having used Outlook express and the Windows Live
Mail for many years. I am now sufferinga problem with the way Outlook behaves.
i have it configured to check for new mail every 3 mins. (I get a lot of
mail) No matter what else I am doing , everything stop suntil it completes
the process.
Since I am often typing, this results in large parts of my typing being
missed. (Whilst the prog has gone off to compleet its other process.
It affects ALL other programmes. Word and Outlook mail itself.
This simply should not be happening. No matter what background proces is
happening I should be safe to get on with my writing.
Anyone able to help? Is theer a hidden switch or option to cure this?
Thanks
Peter

Thank you...
I did all of those things. It makes no difference.
During times when outlook is open, something drags the processing away. I
hear various clicks. There is a gap of up to a minute whilst something is
happening. During that time 'focus' (i.e. the cursor) goes away from the
document, no matter what I do. This results in sections being missed
altogether.
1. What function can be 'demanding' the attention of the cursor?
2. Does this normally happen?
3. Do I need to scrap outlook? ( at the moment it is living on borrowed time
it is REALLY annoying to type and get nothing.
