background items running w/o my knowledge

When I check my task manager while on the web I see that there are some unknown and unwanted items poping in there and running - sometimes I can hear audio from the video player from some kind of a video clip. I can only assume that there has been some sort of bug inserted somewhere on my computer - I have installed spybot and adaware and ran both of these but they found nothing. I had the msblaster virus a month ago when I first purchased this computer new and was on the web w/o the windows firewall running (I know better now) and I have norton antivirus. I have updated all norton, spybot, adaware, microsoft etc... updates and ran them all but the problem persists. On what I think is a related note I can often find several websites showing up on my history list that I did not visit.... what is going on and how can I stop it?

Run Hijack This! and see what turns up. It's free.

Post the items as you see them if you would like me to check against
my system and perhaps research them from the internet. Also,
go to start, run, key in msconfig, startup, see what is starting on your
system at boot. Anything that you don't recognize, you can safely uncheck.
This will prevent them from running in the background.

check MSCONFIG as mentioned also boot to safe mode and run all the scans
again also boot from Norton CD after downloading latest virus definitions
and scan the computer some viruses can hide if they can load first!

"Boot from the Norton CD"?
I'd really like to know more about this procedure.
You don't load Windows at all?
