Back Up

I had a horrible software problem which ultimately required reinstalling
windows, all my programs etc. Very time consuming.

My computer is now working perfectly. It is fantastic! However, I would
like to create a complete backup of everything (operating system, installed
programs etc. etc.) so that I will be able to restore my computer to this
wonderful moment should I ever encounter a similar problem again.

I have Windows XP Home running on my Dell Latitude D610 laptop. I want to
create the backup on an external hard drive.

So far, I have been unable to locate a backup utility within Windows XP
Home. Perhaps it does not exist or perhaps I have missed it. If so, I would
appreciate any help with locating this utility. Thank you.

NTBackup usually can be installed from the media (even XP Home) and/or a
download - however - for what you are considering - I would look into
'imaging' for your initial backup - True Image, Ghost, BootItNG, etc...

I think your best bet for a complete backup of a Laptop is an imaging
program.
This would create an Image of your Hard Drive at that point in time and you
can set aside for that time when "something" goes wrong. This image can be
updated when you make changes to your system. An External HD Enclosure is
the ideal medium for this....but DVD's can work as well with the right
program.
You would then restore that image...and you would be back to a working
system.
Acronis True Image works exceptionaly well for this as it also lets you
create a bootable rescue media which does not require an Operating System to
run and therefore lets you restore the image back to its original location
if you cannot boot to XP.
If you do a Google for it you can read about its other capabilities and
decide if that is what you had in mind.
