Back up files

If I back up my files once a week in a folder on an external hard drive, will
I have 52 folders at the end of a year or will the back up program over
wright on the same folder?

Depends entirely on what backup program you use, and for most backup
programs, what choices you make. In general you should have the choice to do
it either way.
