Greetings!
I have updated my os 2 times: first installation was win 98, then I updated to win2k, and then to win xp. Now I have programs on my hard disk, which I cannot open and I cannot reinstall the programs since the PC tells me that they already exist on the PC.... MS Office doesn't work well either and my sound card "soundblaster live" doesn't react as it used to.

Now - I want to uninstall win XP and go back to win 2k. I'm a PC dummy so this forum is my last chance. Otherwise I'm thinking about investing in a new PC. Do I need to do this or is there something I can do to go back to my win 2k installation?

Thanks in advance,
Grover

Investing in a new PC because you're unhappy with WinXP
is equivalent to buying a new car because you're out of
petrol . . .

I recommend that you save all your data, then install Win2000
onto a blank disk (as opposed to upgrading from an inferior
operating system such as Win9x). This will give you a robust,
rock-solid operating system.

When you're finished, install a good virus scanner and a firewall,
and be highly selective in what you download and install from
the Internet. Much of it is rubbish and is likely to damage your
installation.

You'll need to reformat the HD and start over with a completely blank
drive, once
XP is in there you have no chance to keep it from harassing you from now
on. Save
all your important data and then reformat, then re-install W2K.

You need to think about your OS carefully, don't "update" just because M$
has a
"newer" product. You updated from a solid W98, to an even better W2K, to a
new
and "not ready for prime time" XP. Why? What was it that the newer OS had
that
you needed? Changing an OS is a major big deal, don't do it just because
its out there.

I run W-NT on my work-a-day computer, I run W2K for my home network, I run
W98 on
my laptop. Some of my clients run XP, JUST to keep me in working solving
unnecessary
problems! It's great for my income!!

Greetings --

There is no "rollback" to Win2K.

If you want to replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you're certainly
entitled to do so, as long as you've purchased a legitimate copy of
that earlier OS. (Although I can't imagine why you'd want to.)

Before proceeding, though, you'd better take a few minutes to see
if there are any device drivers for the older OS available for the new
machine. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed by its
manufacturer for WinXP. Also, check with the PC vendor to determine
whether or not replacing the pre-installed OS will void your warranty
and/or any service agreement(s), as normally the case.

To replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you'll have to boot from the
appropriate boot disk, format the hard drive, and install. There is
no supported downgrade path or technique.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and/or format the system partition as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
