I noticed that this site rates the difficulty of refilling the Canon as 1/2
that of the HP. When I get a refill kit, I will probably go back to the
BJC-1000 and its BC-02s.

For now I found a local shop that does refurbished carts for the DeskJet 500
at $15.50 each.

Despite what Mesekite said, HP cartridges do not EVER leak when they are
correctly refilled unless you do something really, really silly. Another one of
his attempts to deliberately misinform..
Age of the cartridge is not that important either. The refill will either work
or it will not, good technique will result in good results most times but of
course the head will eventually fail after many refills. By that time you will
have saved heaps of money.

They proballly mean the bci-3/bci-3e/bci-6 series being 50% easier to
refill... i.e. what you don't own. But that is not to say you can't
refill that bc-02.... just it's not transparent so filling has to be
done by feel. I'm not sure it has a bladder. In a way the bc-02 is
more ideal than the bci-6/bci-3e because it's a $30.00 item that... I
suspect... is empty to begin with... so if you mess up you lost very
little money.

Looks like their only entry for the bc-02 style is the canon bjc-250.
2oz for $5.00 . That should be at least equilivent of $60ish OEM...
plus misc parts.

Cool. But overkill for B+W only. I will try refills once I use up the
current batch of carts. HP first.
I put off refilling my 970 for years, but recently
decided to do it. I don't know about your current
cartridge, but I refilled my 45 (51845) and it is
a piece of cake.

Check
http://alotofthings.com/catalog/BulkInk_HewlettPackard_Main.html
to see if your black cartridge fills from the
bottom (through the print holes). If it does,
then refilling the black will be very easy. Just
be sure to refill before the cartridge goes empty
and some of the heaters burnout.

Be careful about leakage. Also since the HP has a builtin printhead you
do not know how many times it has been used.

I've never had one leak but after several refils the prints do sometimes get
a bit "scratchy" and sometimes the heads just die and refuse to print (not
blocked). When that happens I just suck the ink out and put it back in the
bottle. When the new replacement cart runs out I refill it and off I go
again.

What a Joke and a big pain. I do agree that the HP cart prices are
really out of line. I limit the HP to completed business documents and
use their great draft mode of standard business printing. I use the
Canon for other things and for photos.
