I agree with what you quoted ... but my conclusion is ... no more free AVG.

The newest free download is a v7 beta that expires 11/30/2004.

The regular free download is v6.

I see NO statement on their page that says you'll be able to download a free
v7.

...big snip..

Go to alt.comp.anti-virus and ask there too if you don't understand.

Can you bottom post? Please. TY

It says "AVG 6.0 users should upgrade to AVG 7.0." If I were such a user, I
would.

But I'm a use of "Free AVG 6.0" and I want to upgrade to "Free AVG 7.0"

No one seems to be able to find such a thing.

Doesn't your news server have the replies telling you that it won't be
available until end of Nov. Only Beta available now.

Once again, Papageno. As several other folks have pointed out to you, on
the following web page
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/16/lng/us/tpl/v5
it says:
"Important notice: This Beta version of AVG Free Edition will expire
11/30/2004. By this time, the final version of this product will be
available for your free download."

In other words, by the time the beta version of AVG Free Version 7 expires
on 11/30/04, the final (non-beta) version of the new AVG Free will be
available for you to download for free. What is so difficult about this to
understand?

Daze

There's a big difference between a free download & a free version. The way they word it as a
"free download" has me worried - most would state that the "free version" will be available - it
does not in this case.

I've made plenty of free downloads in the past only to find that you have to pay to activate the
software later.

Free download means just that - you don't have to pay before downloading it.

Well according to the Grisoft announcement
" End of support means we will no longer provide program updates or
Virus Database updates for version 6.0 and therefore, within days, this
version will not protect against new virus outbreaks!"

If they have a free version of 7 available why not upgrade?

Because as of yet, free ver. 7 is still a beta that expires. Also,
signature file updates for ver. 6 will still be happening until Dec.
31, 2004.

I went with Avast Home Edition 4.1 Free version. The program actually
has more options to it than AVG. It has email plugins built into the
program rather that downloading and installing a plugin. Seems like a
nice program.

Heh, your subject line got me worried for a moment, I thought it meant that
AVG was going over to the darkside and would no longer be free...

You seem to be implying that users need to install a separate email plug-in
for AVG? This isn't the case. The email scanner is installed as part of the
download. Just open the AVG Control Centre and click on the Email Scanner
tab to configure it.

(new users take note - it worth considering unchecking the "Certify Outgoing
Messages [as virus free]" option. If not, sooner or later you run the risk
of being given a stern dressing down from a member of the self-proclaimed
Usenet police. Even though you may be posting to a non-binary newsgroup. I
know, it's happened to me, but I'm a good boy now ;)

Good luck with Avast, I'm sticking to AVG - never had any problems with it,
no need to change. (Funnily enough I actually *paid* for a one year licence
for AVG before it went freeware a few years ago...)

the problem is that they use a non-standard signature delimiter. i'm
quite sure it's intentional.

Me, too; I really like 7 beta; I don't look forward to the general issue
when "anyone" can have it.

Everyone is confused AVG has 2 versions of v6 and v7 plus a v7 free
beta...

A) Version 6 Purchased
B) Version 6 Free

C) Version 7 Purchased
D) Version 7 Trial

E) Version 7 Free Beta 2

That's exactly what I see. What I **don't** see is:

F) Version 7 Free

Too bad.

The voice of "Richard Steven Hack" drifted in on the cyber-winds,
from the sea of virtual chaos...
What part of "Beta" don't you understand?

God almighty... Why is anyone still whining about this?

It's quite simple:
1) Grisoft has announced it's end of support for AVG Free v6.x,
and will discontinue updates at the end of the year. Yes folks,
you still have 2 months of updates in the wings.

2) They already have a public Beta of the next AVG Free (v7 core),
which will expire at the end of November. This is a standard
practice for software that's still in development.

3) They have also promised a free version based on this new
technology by the time the beta expires. So somtime in late
November you will see a new AVG Free, but based on the new core.

Since there will be at least a one month overlap between the v6 and
v7 cores there's no need to even update to the free Beta unless you
want to test (read: play with) it.

Is that a simple enough explanation for everyone?
(If not the hand puppets are on standby...)
