Hope this helps.
Can I ask what is probably a daft question ...
If I don't update Adaware now, but I then do when it's next updated,
will I be missing the definitions added in this download ? Or will the
next download auto-include them ?

It's like AVG .. they have little updates, then much bigger updates
(like today's) - are the updates cumulative and all essential ?

It's not that I'm skimping on updates (though I update AVG more as it's
running all the time), I'm just wondering..

With Adaware, each update replaces the definition file with a new
one. So, it's ok if you miss some of the updates. That is the best
method but the problem is that the downloads are larger. Adaware's
definition file, however, is relatively small so it does not matter.
With AVG, you need previous updates. Usually, the files are small
(today is an exception).
One thing that I am not sure about is whether it is necessary to keep
AVG's update files in the update directory after the program
processes them. Are they used only once and then the program copies
the new definitions somewhere else or does the program use the update
directory to store the definition files? Over time, that directory
gets large and it would be nice to know whether it's ok to clean it
up...

If I remember correctly, you can delete the updates from the AVG program
folder. I think they tell you to keep the last one and the control file.
It's on the web site somewhere.

Also with AVG, I can't believe you need to download every little update and
that, if you miss one, you won't be fully protected. I think the program
probably knows what definitions you've missed and downloads them. Otherwise,
if new users were to install the program today, they would never have full
protection because they would have missed lots of previous updates. (I
notice a new install doesn't have the latest definitions, requiring you to
download them ) I suppose I could be wrong, but it just doesn't make sense
otherwise.

I download the updates from the web site so I don't know what the
auto update does....
