Avi importing

all right so I downloaded Windows Movie Maker 2 and did all of the things that they wanted me to do in order to have the codec updated and everything just to import an avi file into the collection. it still doesn't accept it. so what can i do to import the file into the collection
(hopefully someone will respond to this and not neglect this thread like the other ones that i've looked at over here)
 
Are you getting an error message when you try? if so, what?

What's the source of the file? Does it play OK in the Windows Media Player?
