I have recently started using AVG antivirus and have a question please. Not
all but virtually all incoming mail has an attachment which is an AVG
certified virus free note. Being the cautious type I usually don't want to
open mail with attachments. Why is this there? How do I stop it? And why
is it on most but not all incoming mail?

That is AVG telling you that it has checked your incoming mail for viruses,
and certifying them as free from viruses. Go into AVG Control Centre and
have a look round, and if you get time, read the help file.
best wishes..OJ

Thank you.

AVG Control center, email scanner, configure. You can turn off that little
message (which is the attachment paper clip you see) if you want.
