AVG install problem

Hi, not been here for many moons.

Got a call about a slow computer, never seen the machine before or one this
bad.

Its XP and was running diabolically slow and crashing, the kids has used it
for downloading movies.

Anyway brought it home, popped it on my lan (was surprised my kerio on my
only XP machine didnt come up with attack warning like i usualy find when i
add another XP machine with no security) and took a look.

I hooked it up to the web, tried to access websites for AVG, S & D, Ad aware
etc but came with DNS error thru a third party spyware or something called I
search (google was my friend as this was new to me). anyway i had to
trasnfer then over my lan from my scsi server machine.

I was shocked at what the S & D found, i ran that and ad aware and got rid
of a lot, still a few things im struggling to get rid of BUT when i try and
install the latest free ed of AVG i get a error, 16 bit windows subsystem,
The system is not suitable for running MS DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. its mentioning SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.NT Im no expert on XP (or
bugger to be honest)

The computer was legit with XP home but the school teacher said they needed
PRO, so he popped it on, its a Tiny peice of junk, so comes with restore
disk not full install, Now when i saw the state of the computer i said a
fresh install was needed, but having got rid of lots of things like kazaa
and bear share and others, its a lot better, and normally i wouldnt try so
hard, hell they had no firewall or antivirus etc, it wouldnt again let me
access kerio.com so i LAN'd it and got that up first. I got rid of all the
Gain and Gator stuff i could find etc

AVG help FAQ's and google didnt find a solution to the AVG install problem,
and i still need to remove the Isearch bar and a couple of others. SO if
anyone can offer advice that would be great. I dont know if the restore
disk has the agp and sound etc drivers, they said they didnt get them and
would rather have them to hand than try to search for them.

The error is one i havent seen when its had viruses which prevent av
installation, i tried a couple of online scans but had problems with that.

Is there a regestry checker so i can see all entries etc and other usedfull
websites?

BTW they wanted to see what grokster was so i tried installing it on a old
spare pc but my AVG kept flagging up virus and trojans. I had that software
years ago, so where the warnings erroneous or picking up problems? Adroar.B
Adroar.A Dropper.small5 BP

thanks.

Hi Julian,
Sounds as though you do have your hands full. You might like to
take a look at http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/ and download jv16
Powertools. I have and do find this particularly useful for dealing
with the registry. It is possible to enter a product name, eg. AVG and
it will pick out every item and list them for removal, should you wish
and create a backup at the same time. There is a thirty day free
trial period.
Good luck.
