AVG Free stopped working. Now will not load, repair or remove.

I have been running AVG Free for a long time with no trouble. I
currently have version 7, the latest.

Today it would not load. I got an obscure message which I was unable
to copy.

It will not load, or repair, or uninstall. A new installation fails
because an existing version is already installed

I tried removing manually by deleting the files and running
regcleaner, but it still will not install.

So I restored the files from the Recycle bin.

I went back to a system restore point from yesterday.

Still no joy.

I get this message:

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgtdi.sys: starting service....
The service cannot be started, either because it is
disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
(1058)

How can I cleanly remove every trace of the installation and
re-install from scratch?

Any help greatly appreciated

I don't know how comfortable you are with the registry but this is how I
fixed it.

I opened regedit and removed everything AVG + Grisoft (go to edit in the
toolbar and click find) then F3 to find next.
reboot and install.

I hesitated to do this and thought Regcleaner would have done the job.

But I am reasonably at home in the registry so I gave it a try. Had to
be very careful of entries containing "avg" unrelated to AVG, but
found and deleted what must have been around 100 entries.

I haven't tried re-installation yet as I'm running the trial of Panda
meantime, but I am no longer bothered by constant interference from
the incompletely-removed AVG.

Thanks Ken. I saw about these, but mistakenly understood that I would
have to have installed AVG before I could register to post.

I've now taken up Mich's suggestion to remove reference in the
registry manually, and it seems to be OK.

I have three PC's running AVG Free. In late July they all stopped
updating on the same day.

I was so happy with AVG Free. Have they stopped supporting the free
version perhaps ?

*****************************

I think they just came out with a new version but, I was able to update mine
just fine (I only use it on a PC that I scan other peoples hard drives)
but it worked fine.
