AVG any good?

G

GEF

I just got word of the anti verus program AVG. Is it any good, I have been
using Norton Internet security. How do they compare. I understand there is a
version of AVG that is 35.00 or so dollars for 2 years. Dos AVG have a
firewall? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks,Gary

AVG has been around for a number of years, and they do have a free
version. No firewall, though; just anti-virus. Check their web site.
Compared with NIS? Do you like bloatware? <g>

Also consider another very good free a-v program: Avast!.

Oh, have a look at the rest of the subject lines in this group. There
are hundreds of messages about AVG (and others).

Version 7 is shit, read previous posts in this NG

Why is it "shit'? I'm using it now, but some advice would (could) make
me change. I'm also running Avast.

AVG both free and pro are good. I used AVG for around 9 months but I
am currently trialing NOD32. I like the way NOD32 alerts you on
internet trafic as well. The EICAR test string is detected as I
download it in the double zip file instantly! With AVG I need to
download it, save it to disk and then try and access it before I am
alerted.

NOD32 isn't free but is well priced IMO. I have never used Avast! but
have read good things about it, I don't like applications that use !
in the name though :p

Several of us -including myself- explained why over the past couple of months.

What. You don't remember what you wrote? Anyway, I use AVG7 and it works
just fine. I wouldn't switch without a good reason.

I use to think exactly the same - was probably one of the biggest AVG fans
around. When AVG7 came out problems started that some users didn't
experience, but by looking at this NG and the AVG forum there seemed to be a
large number of AVG6 users unhappy with AVG7 changes. Certainly the new
interface in some ways was less user friendly, and the e-mail scanner tended
to cause problems (until the patch came out)..

All that was rather minor to the virus that it kept detecting on my
daughters computer, but didn't do anything about, and no it wasn't a trojan
or something you'd expect AV software to detect but leave alone.... So I
put Avast on and did a scan - not only did Avast detect AND remove that
virus, but it also found 2 more that AVG hadn't even detected...

Apart from that, I found Avast ran smoother than AVG - my daughter only has
a Pentium-233MHz MMX and she is far happier with Avast than she was with
AVG7, seems to be less resource hungry, and the e-mail scanner certainly
doesn't suffer the same problems that AVG7 did when first released!

Anyway - I guess it comes down to personal choice, but there are the reasons
that this long-term AVG user has now dumped AVG from 3 home computers after
years of using (and being happy with) AVG..

Cheers

Avast detects as soon as a click on the link to download the file.....

I use AVG 7 free and have no problems at all, not upto now anyway and
I like it, ok you have to dig a bit deeper maybe to set it all up, i
did it by just looking around "where what was" and "how to"
I am no expert but can navigate around in my PC.

Also, it was the nice guys the experts here who helped me get going
after a bad virus attack some 8 months ago.

What I have lerned is that we cant expect a AV program to do every
thing for us, we have take some time to understand and set it up right
the way we need it.

I run win 98SE, Ad-Aware SE, SpyBot

Does the PC use Windows 98?

(I switched to AVG7 from McAfee to get something small and fast. Seems to
work fine so far, but if there's trouble I might switch again.)

She is running 98SE, 256MB RAM and as mentioned Pentium-MMX 233MHz. She
tells me Avast works better than AVG did with other applications (i.e. not
taking up as much resources)..

Bit harder to tell on the Athlon XP2000, but I do think Avast runs slightly
better, but the daughter definately says it has improved things for her,
so??????

For a home user, I'm very impressed with it. It's fast, easy to use and
free.

It's pretty cool.

Ka.

Vanguard, you are scum.

wolfgang, you are *wrong*...

there are no trojans at http://www.virusbulletin.com or
http://www.av-comparatives.org...

if your anti-virus really did raise alerts when you went to these sites
it was either a) a false alarm, or b) a coincidence (not all trojans
come in from websites - something could have come in through a
different vector at about the same time)...

Wolf

Wolfgang......I would suggest that you read this news group for a while
before labelling anyone as "scum". Vanguard is quite helpful and is
definitely not directing you to a trojan-infested website.

I just went there simply to check....but I knew that you were wrong
anyway...and there is NO TROJAN on that site.

I think you owe Vanguard a public apology. And perhaps you should get a
better antivirus or configure yours properly.
