Does anybody run the free version of AVG Anti-Virus on their computer?
Any comment on how well it works?

Thanks in advance.

CR,

I've been using it for a couple of months now.
Seems to work fine...no viruses.
Free updates every couple of days.
No drag on system resources like McAfee AV caused.

CR,

I've been running AVG Free Edition for the past month or so, following years
of using NAV. I highly recommend AVG Free Edition! It's easy to install and
configure and has caused no problems.

I do and so do many of my customers. A good package that does not seem
to get disabled by viruses as much as Norton does.

Taff, using ZA (free), how does one configure what ports to allow or not
allow?

It's not perfect but together with safe hex, it works perfectly for me.
I'm also running AdAware and Spybot.

Thanks for all the feedback. Would anybody be able to advise what
settings on AVG are best for a virus scan on the home version of
Windows XP?

CR,

You are probably fine using the default settings. If you use Outlook
Express, you can disable all the e-mail settings since the Free Edition
doesn't work with OE. Don't worry, however, you are still protected! If
you try to save a file attachment contained in an e-mail that has a virus,
the AVG Resident Scanner will catch it.

If you have high speed, always-on, Internet access, you might want to set up
the Update Manager to check for updates daily. Double click the AVG icon in
your tasktray (lower right corner of your screen), select the Update Manager
tab and set it to check every day. Also, open AVG (click the icon on your
desktop, not the one in your tasktray) -- if there is no desktop icon,
right-click the tasktray icon and select Run AVG. Click the Scheduler
button at the bottom-right. Select a time of day that the PC will be
running. I find that having AVG scan my PC daily does not interrupt my
work, even if it scans while I'm doing something else.

AVG Free Version does work with Outlook Express - doesn't it? I have the
AVG icon on the Outlook Express toolbar.

Jan,

I got the following in response to a question I e-mailed to Grisoft sales:

---------------------------------

Hello,

The free edition's Outlook Express plugin does not support OE 6.

7.0 features a component called the "personal email scanner" which
includes a wizard for automatic setup and use with Outlook Express.

Please try the 7.0 trial, heres a direct link to acquire it.
ftp://ftp.grisoft.cz/pub/softw/70/trial/avg70t_209.exe

Thanks!

---------------------------------

So, even though you may see an icon in OE, I'm not sure AVG is actually
scanning the incoming messages. You are safe, however, because the Resident
Scanner is monitoring all disk saving activity so if you try to save an
attachment that is infected, it will be caught. At least, that's how I
think it's all working!

On my computer I have AVG 7.0 installed. I run three identities in OE6; one
is an IMAP account (for which the AVG plug-in cannot work); and TWO POP3
accounts.
I cannot see any way to configure the plug-in to monitor both POP accounts,
so I'm forced to choose.
Does anyone know a way around this?

MJD,

If you have AVG 7.0, then I assume you paid for it. If that's the case, you
are entitled to free tech support from Grisoft. Why don't you e-mail them
with your questions?

John,
There might have been a really quick fix available here rather than waiting
2-3 days for an answer from Grisoft.
And yes, I have paid for it!

Good point, sometimes NGs are faster than tech support.

Martin,

I just re-read my post in which I said "If you have AVG 7.0, then I assume
you paid for it." I did not mean to imply that you didn't pay for it. What
I meant is that there is no free version of AVG 7.0, and I gather they offer
free support for it. (As I understand it, the free version is 6.0 and they
don't offer support for that.)

So, my apologies for not having been clearer and perhaps sounding as though
I was suggesting you were using software you didn't pay for.

If I'm not mistaken, the plugin is not monitoring the accounts, it is
monitoring anything coming into your email client via the specified
email ports. So it should catch anything coming in from either
account.

Your email client knows about accounts, but only deals in email
protocols from and to specified ports and IP addresses - after the
mail arrives, it sorts it into the right account as far as your visual
views and mailboxes are concerned.

The AVG AV knows nothing about accounts, it only knows data coming in
and out of a port addressed to your email client. It checks the data,
then hands it off to your email client if it's clean. Doesn't matter
where it comes from.

No worries.
In fact one can download a trial of AVG 7.
But I didn't. I actually had a paid version of AVG 6 (professional) and when
7 was released they gave me a free upgrade.

Thanks for your input, Richard.
But AVG 7 email plugin actually is address-specific. And having set it up
for one address, that's it. No chance to add further addresses. (such as my
wife's address which runs as a different identity on this computer, or my
'private' address which ditto).
In fact, once the setup wizard has been run, I see little chance of even
running it a second time.
One can't even run multiple copies of AVG; I'm sure that would cause total
havoc!
Having said that, the email plugin works very well indeed for the one
account its been set up for!!
Ho Hum...........

M

MJD

OK, you made me look at it again Richard, and I think I figured it out.
Thanks.
Its something like this;.....
First open OE in the identity you want to protect.
Open AVG Control Center
click the email scanner button, and click on Properties
Select Personal Email Scanner in the drop down window
click Properties
click Servers
Then I used the Wizard to configure the email scanner for the identity in
use at that time.
to finish the process AVG asks you to shut down OE;
and Bob's yer Uncle!

It still won't work for IMAP mail, but it DOES work for outgoing mail in the
identity with the IMAP incoming account.

How could I ever have doubted you, Grisoft!
