AVG Anti-virus 7.5

I recently tried to uninstall and reinstall AVG 7.5 Free edition.

When running the install programme, this is what happens:
- I press NEXT (to start the install process)
- immediately a message appears to say "Installation Complete". However, no
files have been written to my computer.

I have heard that Windows Defender may be causing the problem. Is this true?

I went to Tools > Options and unchecked 'Use Windows Defender' (to turn it
off) but still had the same problem trying to reinstall AVG.

You more or less answered your own question... if Defender's turned off and
you still can't install AVG, then why would you think Defender is
preventing it?

Sounds much more like something another Anti-Virus might be doing,. A
trial installation of Windows Live OneCare maybe? That is one of the AVs
that tries to preserve you from the mistake of trying to use more than one
real time AV at a time, but it could be any of a number of other AVs and or
different explanations as well... Suggest you take that question to
Grisoft, but there are many AVG users here also using Defender so maybe
you'll get more specific ideas from those folks. They might be able to
tell you where to look for the AVG installation log.

I have solved the problem and posted the solution on the Tech Support Guy
forums.
I have no reason to believe the problem was, in fact, related to Windows
Defender.

I wasn't sure if I should post the solution since the problem, as it turns
out, has nothing to do with Windows Defender. But in case anyone else like
me mistakenly thought it was, and is having this problem, here's how I solved
it:

SOLUTION

I went to Start > Run > %tmp% and found the AVG install log.
I noticed it had recorded 'Access Denied' to a number of registry keys.
I went to Start > Run > regedit and located the keys.
I was unable to delete them.
I added permissions to them.
I deleted them and rebooted.
I was then able to install AVG.

It could also be the bad update that MS gave out last week. It seems to have
caused all kinds of problems especially with AVG.
