AutoPlay Handlers missing, yet not missing...

This problem came out of nowhere and I cannot figure out how to fix it...

All of a sudden, my AutoPlay handlers that typically appear in a dialog box
when you insert a CD or USB device have vanished, and are replaced by a
auto-opening Explorer window, regardless what content the device/disc has,
even a DVD (nice to see a VIDEO_TS folder instead of your DVD :S )...

When I go into My Computer, right-click on either of my CD drives, select
Properties and goto the AutoPlay tab, there are NO HANDLERS listed under
"Select an action to perform" for any content type!

I have TweakUI installed, and when I goto My Computer / Autoplay / Handlers,
every handler on my system is still being listed, and Autoplay is enabled for
all media.

I've tried disabling / enabling Autoplay, and trying everything on Kelly's
Corner website without sucess, including the Autoplay AutoFix tool.

If someone could help me to restore my handlers, I would be most greatful!

Edison,

First option, run System Restore and roll back the system to a date where the problem was not seen. If that does not help, type this command from Start, Run dialog.

regsvr32 /i shell32

This should restore most of the AP Handlers.

The first suggestion is not an option in my case as I have System Restore
disabled on my machine; it's never done anything for me but cause greif...

I tried your second suggestion, and it too unfortunately had no affect.
Would perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling all CD/DVD/USB drives correct the
problem?

PS I have a second WinXP Pro SP2 machine that is unaffected by this
problem... Is there any registry entries I could possibly "graft" over to the
affected machine to restore the missing AP handlers?

I failed to read the part "TweakUI installed, and when I goto My Computer / Autoplay / Handlers, every handler on my system is still being listed"

This makes me believe that the problem is not with the Autoplayhandlers key, but missing COM registration. Try this command from Start, Run dialog:

regsvr32 actxprxy

BTW, it's also worth verifying the Autoplayhandler REG entries with that of another XP system. The key is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers

Export the REG key from the two systems, then do a File compare of both the REGs.

I tried the command "regsvr32 actxprxy" and it came back with a message
"DllRegisterServer in actxprxy suceeded.", however did not have any effect.

I also compared the REG entries for the Autoplayhandlers between the two
machines. With the exception of entries for Adobe Premiere on the affected
machine, the keys were identical.

And to top it all off, I just noticed another peculiar thing... My
logon/logoff sounds don't seem to function anymore when I attempt to
Lock/Unlock my workstation by pressing WinKey + L... In order to get them
working again, I have to fully log off without rebooting and then log back
on. I'm going to start ripping my hair out soon :S

Have you restarted the system? If that does not help, no idea for now what is causing the problem. Perhaps restarting the Shell Hardware detection service would help!
