Hello NG,

on my IE 6 installation, when I follow a http link, it automatically changes
the URL to https when needed. Now, on my friends computer (also using IE6 it
doesn't) but just fails to display.

Any idea what setting in IE6 determines if IE changes automatically from
http to https when
necessary.

Thanks for any input.

Carl

Thanks Martin for the quick response.

Actually, my friend has no problem displaying the site when he explicitly
types https://....
The problem was that on mine, even if a link f.ex. in an email shows
http://... it will change to https:// if required and open without problems.
On my friends PC, the link just fails and only displays correctly if he
explicitly types https://

Any idea,

Carl

Thanks Mike, but the problem is not to display the https:// pages.

The scenario is as follows:

Somebody sent me a link with http://.... When I click it opens as
https://... in Explorer. Great, somehow Internet Explorer check the link and
recognizes that this is not a http but a https site, automatically corrects
the url to https://... and displays the resulting page.

But on my friends computer, this same link fails and only displays correctly
when he manually changes http://... to https://

So, my quesiton is why is my installation auto correcting the link and his
not.

Any idea.

Mike,

since I mentioned links, it's the same if I paste the http:// url directly
in the address bar. It automatically corrects it to https if necessary (on
my PC). Again on my friends PC it doesn't but just fails so that he needs to
manually change it to https.

I'll have a look tomorrow on his PC to see if his registry entries differ
from mine.

Thanks,

You would have to post a URL in order to get a definitive explanation
but one possibility is that the redirect for the problem link is implemented
using META Refresh in which case if the Security option for that
was disabled that kind of redirect would not work. Sometimes sites
which use this method of redirect leave you clues that this is being done
and give you an alternate link for you to click manually but unfortunately
some don't give you any clue or alternate assist at all. In that latter case
in order to proceed you may have to use View Source and construct
the intended URL yourself.

First of all, thanks to both of you for trying to solve this issue.

- Now, I set the security to default but in vain. No redirection happened.

- I also made sure that Meta Refresh is enabled in IE but in vain as well.

After talking to some other friends here, it looks like that everybody using
a specific ISP has that problem.

Is this possible? Could it be ISP related? If yes, how? Any idea? Carl
