automatic updates

I recently did a "dirty" re-install on my wife's machine. Now, I keep getting
a notice that updates are available. They download just fine but fail to
install. Following the advice supplied in the Microsoft knowlege base ( 8
possible solutions in all ) I still have the same problem. I know the problem
is more than likely that the updates are already installed and they won't
allow themselves to be overwritten. I would like to avoid "repaving" the
machine so if anybody has a solution I would be very greatfull.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
