re:Automatic Updates
If I set Automatic Updates for 3 AM and prior to this my system has
gone to sleep in accordance with the power scheme, will it wake up to
scan for Automatic Updates?

Hello,

From
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

...If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled
updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day.
Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be
installed. ..

If your computer was off during that time, it should check for updates once
you switch it back on.

Obviously, there are some processes running when XP is in 'stand by'
mode, otherwise the compute would not wake-up when you moved your
mouse or pushed a button on the keyboard. To these ends I was
wondering if Automatic Updates is one of these tasks that can take XP
out of 'stand by'.

Thank you,

Hello,

There are no processes running when XP is in standby mode.

Only hardware devices (such as mouse movements, modem receiving call,
keyboard key press, power button press, etc) can cause it to wake up. These
are handled by the BIOS and not by XP.
