Automatic Updates

While downloading the Automatic Updates...first time...my Personal Firewall
keeps poping up saying that the "update.exe" is "not the same program you
allowed before, but it has the same name as the one you allowed. Do you want
to allow it?"
Well, I'm doing updates, so I respond "YES".
This got me to thinking.
I looked up "update.exe" on a search engine, and that took me to a MS site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/deployment/winupdte.mspx
The site says "The Package Installer (Formerly Called Update.exe) for
Microsoft Windows Operating Systems and Windows Components".
Now, I'm concerned about spyware "piggybacking" on my updates.
How should I handle this?

I'm replying to my own message because I went ahead and allowed all of the
Firewall questions abour "update.exe".
Everything seemed to go okay, but as long as I have automatic updates
enabled, I keep getting the same file ready for installation.
I told it to go ahead and install about 40 or 50 times before I got wise to
the fact that it was the same update over and over.
It didn't matter if I was connected to the internet or not.
The file was/is KB832483...an MDAC security update.
When I accessed the Windows Updates site, it showed in my history that I had
installed it more than a few times and that each time it was successful.
....and it STILL asks me if I want to install it.
I disabled automatic updates and chose the "Custom" installs.
The IE6 SP1 update was recommended.
I allowed it.
It said that it would be 9+ MB in size.
I'm on dialup.
It downloaded for a few minutes and then quit, with a message that said it
could not continue.
I clicked "Okay", and the message disappeared and I was taken to snother
page which said that the installation was successful.
It, also, said that I really needed the MDAC KB832483 update!
I couldn't believe my eyes.
Now, I'm getting splashes that say there is a script error on my ISP's home
page, and asking me if I want to continue running scripts on the page.
AND
Everytime I click on a video file, my computer locks up.
I have to MANUALLY turn it off and back on.
So far, I've only clicked .avi and .wmv files.
I really would appreciate some advice on these problems.
Thank you.

It's buried so far down, in that forum, that a bloodhound couldn't find it.
