Automatic Updates

Since installing an updates pack, that was given to me as
part of the support from my laptop, I've been unable to
turn off automatic updates.
I have administrator access, but the automatic updates
dialogue in system->automatic upates, is greyed out.
I want to turn off automatic updates and return control to me.
